Product Story:

When a founding artist at the Good Medicine Collective was asked by a family member —a middle school teacher in Phoenix, AZ— what flag could be used to empower her Indigenous students in the classroom, the answer was clear: the American Indian Movement (AIM) flag. The teacher wanted to proudly display the flags of all her students’ heritages, and the artist knew the AIM flag had to be the first.

But the conversation didn’t stop there. The artist emphasized the importance of recognizing the diversity of Indigenous tribes, reminding her that “Indigenous tribes are not a monolith.” They encouraged her to ask her students about their individual tribal affiliations, while also acknowledging that the AIM flag represents a unifying force for all tribes across Turtle Island.

The teacher’s next question struck a chord: “Can I get an AIM flag from a Native creator?” Despite extensive research, the artist was heartbroken to discover that the only options available were mass-produced, “Made in China” reproductions of the classic 1970s movement flag, even if they were being sold by Native-owned businesses. This lack of authentic, Indigenous-made representation was a stark reminder of how systemic erasure and disconnection have impacted Native communities.

In response, Good Medicine Collective's founding artist took action. In 2025, this modern AIM flag was designed by the Indigenous artist reclaiming the narrative and ensuring that the flag’s power and perspective remain rooted in Indigenous creativity and ownership.

This flag is more than a symbol of resistance and unity—it’s a testament to the resilience of Indigenous peoples and a step toward reclaiming our stories, our art, and our future.
