Product Story Spotlight: American Indian Movement (AIM) Wall Pennant: Bringing the Fight into a Modern Light
Share
The American Indian Movement (AIM) has long stood as a powerful force for Indigenous resistance, sovereignty, and justice. Now, through the Good Medicine Collective, we introduce the AIM Wall Pennant—a piece that not only honors this historic movement but also ensures Indigenous representation remains in the hands of Native creators.
First, what is the American Indian Movement?
Founded in 1968, but with roots back to 1890, the American Indian Movement emerged in response to systemic oppression, police brutality, and the ongoing marginalization of Indigenous peoples in urban centers and beyond. Sound familiar? While AIM initially focused on advocating for urban Native communities, it quickly expanded its reach to address broader issues of sovereignty, treaty rights, and cultural revitalization.
AIM was instrumental in several landmark protests, including the occupation of Alcatraz (1969-1971), the Trail of Broken Treaties (1972), and the Wounded Knee Occupation (1973). These demonstrations not only brought national attention to the struggles of Native communities but also solidified AIM’s role as a fierce advocate for Indigenous rights.
AIM unites many nations and all our relations.
One of AIM’s greatest strengths is its ability to unite tribes across Turtle Island. While Indigenous nations are diverse—each with distinct languages, traditions, and histories—the movement provides a shared platform for addressing common struggles. AIM has worked alongside tribes from the Anishinaabe and Lakota to the Diné, Apache, and beyond, reinforcing the message that sovereignty and self-determination are universal Indigenous rights.
Modern day AIM
While AIM’s most publicized actions took place in the 20th century, its work is far from over. Today, AIM remains a vital force in movements for Indigenous justice, from land back initiatives to protecting sacred sites and demanding accountability for missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW) and relatives (MMIR). The movement continues to empower Indigenous youth, revitalize traditional knowledge, and resist ongoing colonization in all its forms.
One of the most defining moments of modern Indigenous resistance was the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) protests at Standing Rock in 2016-2017. Thousands of water protectors, including AIM members and allies, gathered to oppose the construction of an oil pipeline that threatened sacred lands and water sources. The movement, led by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, became a global symbol of Indigenous resistance against environmental destruction and corporate exploitation. Though the pipeline was ultimately built, the fight sparked a new wave of activism, reinforcing the message that Indigenous sovereignty and environmental justice are deeply interconnected.
Good Medicine Collective's Revitalization of the AIM Flag Through a Modern Wall Pennant
This modern take on the AIM flag was born out of a heartfelt conversation between a Good Medicine Collective artist and a middle school teacher in Phoenix, AZ. Seeking to empower her Indigenous students, the teacher wanted a flag that represented them, and the artist knew the AIM flag was essential. However, when they searched for an Indigenous-made version, all they found were mass-produced, non-Native reproductions. This realization led to the creation of an AIM pennant designed by an Indigenous artist, ensuring that its meaning remains rooted in Native hands.
More Than a Flag—A Statement of Resistance
The AIM Wall Pennant is more than just a decorative piece; it is a statement. Featuring a bold red fist within a medicine wheel, this pennant represents resistance, empowerment, and the interconnectedness of all life. The four sacred colors—red, black, yellow, and white—symbolize unity and balance among all people and elements of existence.
By purchasing this pennant, you are not only supporting Indigenous art but also standing in solidarity with the ongoing fight for justice and sovereignty. Every pennant is crafted upon order, ensuring a unique, high-quality piece that is made with intention and care.
